The prosecution alleged that prisoner was the leader of a gang of boo baudits who entered a village, and, after over coming the watchmen, ransacked the houses, killing several people. They next set fire to the village and carried away about 120 of both sexes into captivity. with a view to claiming ransoni.

SMUGGLING ABMS
INGENIOUS METHODS.
An old Chinese, who lu just arrived in the Colony from abroad, on his way to Canton, was searched on board the On Leg by Sergeant Fallon and a Chinese detective, the Police having and inform- ation that he intended to smuggle am munition into China. Sergeant Fallon searched the man's luggage and found parts of a Winchester rifle in fourteen different packages.
The man was arrested and produced fure Mr. R. E. Lindsell, at the Magis

Defendant ploaded ignorance of the Jaw, stating that he was a stranger to the Colony. A friend gave him the parts of the rifle to bring to the Colony.
Laspector Boulger informed the Magia. trate that it was a very cunning way of smuggling rifles into the Colony. Several men brought in different parts of a rifle, and, if they escaped detection, they went to China and put the parts in place. When he was in the Water Police, ho re membered several instances in which Chinose brought rißes into the Colony and were arrested by the Police on arrival. After some time the smugglors changed their methods, under the advice, no doubt, of stewards of the American steamers on which they travelled, and attempted to smuggle parts of rifles to ho used in the strifa in China.
Mr. Lindsell fined defendant $25.
**A NICE (1) LITTLE BOY HAD A
NICE CAKE OF SOAP."
A dirty, untidy-looking Chinese youth was produced before Mr. R. E. Lindsell, at the Magistracy, yesterday, and charged with the theft of a box of per- fumed soap.
Complainant stated that while hawking goods in Stanley Road, he felt a tug at his tray, and, turning round, noticed dafondant agd another boy running 'away.
