HONGKONG SHIELD
The first games in the competition for the Shield which took place on Boxing Day proved the attraction they were expected to be, and a good sum (nearly #400) was realised for the very deserving object for which it was asked.
if the first game was rather disappoint- ing, it was nevertheless sensational, for,! after changing ends without a goal being scored in the upening half, the ball woai notted no fewer than six times in the
second half, the Navy claiming five of the guals. The R.O.A. defence was strong- thoned by the inclusion of Youngman, but the gunners were terribly handicapped by the absence of Green, their "crack " ccatre forward, who was suffering from an injury which he received to his leg last Saturday. To make matters worse. the soldiers, through a misunderstanding, started with only ten mon, and play had been in progress some few minutes yefore they were able to complete their number. The sailors were without Smith, their usual centre-half, but bad discovered a very able substitute, Licut, Torr, Tal- fourd and Sharman, in their respective, lines, worked like trojans and were in a class by themselves in the Artillery team;; while in the Navy elovon all were so good that it was difficult to single out in-
dividuals for special praise, although! McNiven and Warriner both shone ia
the second
very fine forward line. Once the Navy had scored they could do nothing wrong and the B.G.A. nothing
right, the sailors eventually qualifying for round, .e. the semi-final, by winning the gano by five goals to one. The gunners Look their trouncing in a fine sporting spirit, which made things easy for the refereo and kept the game pioneant. They freely admitted at the end of the game that they had been beaten by a superior
team.
