At the Hongkong Magistracy, yester- day, before Mr. J. R. Wood, a Chinese MURDERER HOLDS POLICE AT BAY was charged on two counts (1) with endorsing a cheque for $9; (2) with endorsing a cheque for $40, and uttering the same with intent to defraud.

Defendant pleaded guilty to the charge.. and Mr. Wood stated that, as the offence did not come within his jurisdiction, he would remand the case till Thursday, when he would bear the evidence. If the case were proved against defendant be would be sent to the December Criminal Sessions.

The reason for this dastardly deed is not known, for the one who could have enlightened the Police died a few minutes after being shot through the abdomen, without being able to utter a word to the friends who ran to his assistance.
It appears
that the murderer was or duty between 6 p.m. and midnight at the main gate of the Naval Depot, while Sergt. Linfeld was generally patrolling the depot. Suddenly, in the stillness of the night, a shot rang out, followed by a ery of pain, and when the other European sergeants, who were sleeping in their STEAMER quarters, rushed out to ascertain the cause of the disturbance, they noticed Sergeant Linfield staggering towards theim, Before they could reach him be dropped dead, just fifty yards from the quarters. The murdered man immediately examined, and found to be beyond medical aid. He had a gun-shot wound. penetrating the abdomen from left to right, and it was bleeding profusely.
