"OUB DAY" IN
FRIDAY, OCTOBER 25TH, 1918.
HONGKONG.
TRIUMPH OF ORGANISATION.
SPLENDID FINANCIAL RESULT ASSURED.
The European community in Hong- kong was busily employed yesterday col- lecting money for the "Our Day Fund" Business was almost at a standstill in the forenoon, far, with the distraction of a constant stream of gaily-clad young ladies making irresistible appeals on behalf of the good cause, it was scarcely possible that the ordinary routing work of the commercial houses could receive serious attention. Lo the aftercoon the affices were closed to allow of everyone attending the Gymkhana at Happy
Valley.
THE SALE OF ROSES,
The city looked its gayest yesterday morning, the flags of the Allies dying conspicuously from most of the buildings, and
the traments were bedecked From about eight
with patriotic, fings. o'clock in the morning the streets were taken charge of by devies of young ladies, dressed in white and bedecked with num erous badges, bearing trays of roses and "Our Day" badges. So wholeheartedly did both the vendors and the buyers enter into the spirit of the day, that in many ofthe posts the stock of roses ran out in less than an hour,
The Hon. Mr--|
E. R. Hallifax, O.B, E, the Hon. Becre-- tary, was telephoned to, and, obtaining the aid of a motor-car, he ensured a better distribution of the roses that re-
mained.
It is too early yet to venture even an approximate estimate of the financial result, because the full pro gramme will not be completed for some days yet, but the splendid co-operation of effort is expected' to yield as large a sum as was raised for the same worthy object last year. The collections on be half of "Our Day have, indeed, shown a gratifying increase each year. In 1915 they amounted to $12,000, in 1916 to $1,000, and in 1917 to the substantial total of $110,415-result due in no small measure to the drawing of war bonds, from which the handsome figure of $39,000 was obtained. This year there was no drawing of war bonds, but the Hongkong Gymkhana Club kindly ranged a Gymkhana in its place..

The large crowd at Happying Committon, Mrs. Gurner, and the Valley, and the generous manner in which the side-shows were patronised, encour ages the belief that the Gymkhana will be the means of furnishing as much money as the War Drawing last year. The illuminated fete at night attracted a gathering of several thousands. The 85 cents were all sold out early yesterday
A feature of the sale of rose in the morning was that every possible source of revenue was tapped. Besides the large numbers of ladies and girls who thronged the streets, systematic calls were made at the offices in the city and the residences on the upper levels and in Kowloon. The ships in harbour were visited by Mias Gurner, with the Misses Ventris and Robertson and the Masters Long, in a motor boat, with very gratifying results The military pests, even the most remote of them, ware "raided," and the Star Ferry and the Government Civil Hospital received due attention.
