1918.
We are told that it is only by the formation of associations or anions of manufacturers that costs of production can be kop: down. A few days ago we published a speech by Mr. East, of the General Electric Co., Ltd, of London. in which he announced the absorption by or amalgamatich with, his own ârm of another very large concern, famous all over the world" for mining and other machinery. The general idea behind this statement, and that recently made by other "captains of industry is that, in order to manufacture cheaply, the work must be of a repetition nature and exécuted in bulk. We have seene enorm ous aggregations of capital by means of these amalgamations, especially in bank- ing circles, until the question arises WATERWAYS whether the day is far distant when the

One purpose of these new arrangements appears to be connected with overrens trade. A concern with a capital of three million sterling or more can afford to send its own direct representatives into new market, such as China, while similat enterprise would not be practic able in the part of a smaller firm Obviously such a course is not conducive to the interests of the import and export merchant, who usually works on commis sion and is only able to keep going by the very variety of his trade, for, when business in one line is bad in some other it may be good. It is said that the merchant and his compradore will be replaced by salaried servants, European and Chinese, who will be encouraged by the bonus system. It is only natural, therefore, that, although we see no public manifestation of it, there should be some apprehension in the minds of commis sion agents and others in trade conceza- ing recent developments. Efforts should be directed now towards securing a reduction in the Cable-rates, as urged by the late Sir HENKER HEATON shortly, before bin death. The lower the expenses in con nection with overseas trade the cheaper will it be possible to sell in any parti- cular market. The volume of trade in this part of the world will increase after the war, for Europe will stand in need of China's raw materials, and, as the French and British are at a disadvantage compared with their rivals owing to the greater distance which separates them from the Home manufacturers, every facility possible must be placed at their disposal,
