A Canadian mission worker who hadtion - been a prisoner in the hands of the Germans in "German "East Africa from the commencement of the war till the British occupied the country months ago, has been spending a few days in Hongkong on his way back to Canada Seen by a reporter of the Buuly Prexs he was dawilling to relate his experiences, because, be said, he had suffered too much at the hands, of the Germans for 2 months and 11 days, in ever want to recount bis sufferings. The tale was too terrible, and was typical of what the Germans had done in Germany itself, and Poland, and what, their Turkish "brothers" ·had done in Armenia.

Our reporter was, however, able to glenn a fow" particulars of the experi- ences of some of the European mission- aries who had been in captivity. Mr. W. Green was one of a band of 50 mis- sionaries in German" East when the war commenced. Rumours of war bad never reached them out there in the "silent places," and it was a rude awakening to them when they were sumy maned by the German authorities on August 4th, 1914.

Before this, rumours had been bruited about that the relations between the -British and the Germans, whose terri- tories adjoined each other, were strain- ed, and he had heard that a British Police Officer and a number of Askaris had been murdered by the Germans some days before war was declared in Europe. Thi act of hostility did not seen to be expect. ed, and the relations between the two nations were very near breaking point when the news was received that Britain and Germany were at war.

-

The British subjects in

**German East Africa seemed all to be Missionaries. and "when, in answer to the sammons from the German authorities, they re ported themselves at the capital, their papers were examined, and they were allowed out on patrol, he doubt under a certain amount of surveillance This comparative freedom, however, was only to last for ten days, far on August 24th, 1014, they were all summoned again to the capital, and this time they were put into a prison camp, where they remained till General Younghusband's victorious army forced the Germans to retreat, and the prisoners were released.

The indignities which the 58 white men in the camp were forced to undergo Mr. Green could not be induced to describe. Suffice it to say that their sufferings were terrible, and it was only the fact that the prisoners were buoyed up with the bope that the British would soon enter toe country that enabled them to bear up. They were given the cheapest native food. The sanitary arrangements were horrible, and in every way their life was made as much shell" as it was pos sible to make it. They were not allowed to keep diaries or any other written

matter....

When they were released, those men who could carry a rifle joined the British forces, and perhaps some of them got an opportunity of paying off their score. Mr. Green was one of those who joined the Army, but the long months of imprison ment had taken toll of his physique and he was soon forced by broken health to

AQUATIC SPORTS MEETING- HONGKONG CADETS DAY OUT?" "THOROUGHLY SUCCESSFUL AFTER-, NOON'S SPORT.

A large gathering assembled at the Vie toria Recreation Club on Saturday after. noon to witness the annual aquatic sports of the Hongkong Defence Corps Cadet Company, sad both the competitors and the visitors enjoyed a pleasant and in teresting afternoon. Lieut. Beard and the Company's Drill Instructor were in charge of the meeting, and the events were worked off punctually..

Amongst those present were the Hon. Mr. Claud Severn, CM.G., Major and Mrs. Morgan, Major and Mrs. Han mond, and Mr. and Mrs. F. B. L. Bowley. The sports commenced abortly after a noticeable feature being the extreme keen. p.m. and continued for three hours," a

ness of the competitors.

The standard achieved, both in diving and swimming, was quite as good as that of last year, and the events showed that the Company possesses some swimmers of great promise, especially among the younger lads. The 920 yards Champion ship went to Lyon, with Jack, a close second. These two lads were conspicu ously successful

on Saturday. They finished first and second, respectively, in " the 100 yds. and the 50 yds. swimming races, in spite of heavy handicapping, while the all-round excellence of Lyon was mainly responsible for No. 1 Section winning the coveted shield presented by Lieut. Beard. This shield has been com- peted for twice previously.

No, i' Sec- tion won it in 1918 and No. 2, Section wrested it from them in 1817, so that it must have been a source of great satisfact- tion to No. 1 Section to get it back again. Logan, Lawson, Brown and Robertson proved the most promising of the junior boys

At the close of the competitions; Mrs. Morgan distributed the prizes amid much cheering. When this duty bad been per formed, Lieut. Beard said that Sergeant. Jack, one of the members of the Com- pany, was shortly leaving for the front. He had been a member of the Company from its inception, and was a very cap able non-commissioned officer.
