although not immediately connected with the proceeding against Mr Tarrant, will show that he had made himself very conspicuous in the matter out of which the intended prosecution arose, and to use Mr. Parker's words, - "to take great interest" in the affair, did Mr. Tarrant, as it would appear, and his Servant Shelley Garner - their object appearing to be to oust the then Market Holder "Altai", and to substitute "Wei - A form" "the Co-defendant Mr Ferrant. But should it be maintained that Mr Tarrant in using the expressions attributed to him meant them to have references to Major Faine's Comprador alone, how is it that he did not give that explanation at the time the question was first brought up for investigation at the Police Office? Mr Tarrant in his subsequent letters to the local Government and to Your Lordship, declares that he had not the remotest idea of insinuating that he believed that any extortions were made with the knowledge of Major Faine; and he had only declined to explain himself when the Investigation took place, there is no doubt that the matter would have then dropped, but this he appears to have declined
