If they hid every desire that the Examinations should be preliminary to impartially taken.

10. My Lord, In the Depositions, we have the evidence of one English Officer and three Chinese to prove, that "Wei-Afoon" did on this occasion act as he did because he was instigated by Mr Tarrant.

He hid a certain liability to come to the conclusion that Mr Tarrant did visit the 2nd Witness and talk to him in the manner described, nor indeed does Mr Tarrant deny having done so.

Having come to this conclusion on the fact that Mr Tarrant did visit "Chow-Avan" as described, and that "Wei-Afoon" did say that in his Proceedings he had been acting under the directions of Mr Tarrant, it is necessary to determine the object of Mr Tarrant's words to that effect.

To Your Lordship, who must be importantly impressed with the mode of acting and speaking of Chinese, it may be obvious, but to others it may not be so. Anyone familiar with them and their mode of action, the expressions attributed to Mr Tarrant will scarcely bear two significations.
