SWATOW NOTES

[FROM OUR OWN CORRESPONDENT.]

SWAROW, May 12th.

MERCHANTS MILITARY.

It is evident that North and South China are fairly evenly matched from” u military point of view. The Northern soldier, notwithstanding his superior training and equipment is not able to wrest any advantage from the South The continual Warfare is disastrous

the State. As for ag can be gathered

from the ny mind of the country there isan earnest desire for peace. The military should certainly heed the appeal, which has been addressed to them, accom. panied by a remonstrance and a thecaf. A combination of all the merchant class in Chins against the continuance of strifo is a formidable one and not to be. disregarded. Its ramifications extend throughout the whole Republic. The method of action proposed by this national movement shows no little in genuity. It proceeds on the assumption that if the merchant classes as a whole withdraw their pecuniary support the military will be helpless. The intention is to declare a national boycott a refusal to pay any taxes to be used for inter necine warfare. The echome has not yet been seriously put to the text. Acting on the principle that in a Republic the people wield the power, the merchants regard their position as invulnerable. They seek also, to press the Peking

Government to reveal their hand with regard to the treaty or treaties made with Japan.

LUNG'S RESERVES.

We learn now that Lung Chi-kwong'a early victories have not been followed up, but, on the contrary, his troops have lost what they won and more. It is reported that both a son and son-in-law of the General fell fighting. Liu Chi-ling to whom was given the chief direction of the Cantonese expedition, has been in variably successful in his encounters with Lung. Now, having practically complet. ed his task, it is reported that he is about to return to Swalow. During his short administration in the port be made a favourable impression, and, according ly, the citizens are pleased to learn that he is about to resume his former duties TRIBUTE TO FORSIGNERS.
