on the same scale as

of English Parliament who hold appointments in the colony and not upon that awarded to Civil Commissioners for whose Office a professional education is not considered a requisite - Previously your forwarding my application I named

which I considered would be
a reasonable remuneration to a professional man employed in the
in the same manner as - it exceeds the sum proposed by his Excellency I think that I cannot with consistency

I beg
to
respectfully inform you that I decline the appointment
on the offered terms

I have to acknowledge the receipt of your Letter of the 14th instant recommending
to my favorable Notice, Mr. Burgass
your Adviser, and Mr. Woonam, the Assistant-legal Secretary of Hongkong and likewise acquainting me that the salaries due to those Gentlemen between the 30th March last, and the 7th of May may be paid. I beg to assure you
that every consideration shall be given to your recommendation
of Messrs. Burgass and Wernam
I have requested the Lords Commissioners of Her Majesty's Treasury to direct the
payment
to them
of the Salary
due between the 30th March last and the 7th of May and shall be happy to make a similar application to their Lordships on behalf of Captain Cristy
on your informing me of the exact amount you consider due to him.
