The duty in Ireland on tea was, until 1800, from 4, and 7d. per lb. ; then raised to 201. and 354. per cont, ad valorem; 1802, to 23. and 38 l.; in 1804, to 51 7. and 847.; in 1866, to 71 Z. and 844.; 1810, to y37; 1814, to g6 7.; 18:9, to gl and 106 7. per cent. The revenue from tea sold in Ireland is not included from the year 1789 to 1828; it was kept separate until 1827.

(*) Remarks. From 1731 to 1734, the prices of tea were, Bohea and Congou, 10s. to 14s. per lb.; Pekoe, 14s. to 18s.; Hyson, 25s. to 35s. per lb.

"The Commutation Act," passed in 1704, required the East India Company to make quarterly sales, to sell, even if 1d. were offered on the prime cost, and to keep always on hand a quantity equal to one year's consumption. The duty was reduced to 12 l. 10s. per cent., Customs and Excise. The object of the "Commutation Act" was to suppress smuggling, which it did effectually, to increase the importation of tea, and cause a diminution of price to the consumer; hence the augmentation of tea used, and not (as erroneously supposed) from a reduction of duty from 27, 10s. to 127, 108. per cent. In 1795 the duty was raised to 20 7. per cent.; in 1798, to 357.; in 1800, to 40; in 1801, to 50l.; in 1803, to 95; and

An examination of this Table shows that tea has had an extended consump yet the consumption of tea steadily increased. tion, irrespective of the duty levied, and chiefly during late years, when the duty has been highest.

From 1818 to 1819, average price of tea, Bohea, 2s. 6d.; Congou, 3s.; Twankay, 3s. 2d.; Hyson, 5s. 3d. per lb. Bohea, 3s. 1d.; Congou, 3s. 3d.; Campoi, 3s. 6d.; Souchong, 48.; Twankay, 3s. 7d.; Hyson, 5s. 10d.; Pekoe, 7s.; Hyson Skin, 35. 10d.; average prices of 1814.

Bohea, 1s. 6d.; Congou, 28. 3d.; Campoi, 3s. 6d.; Souchong, 25. 10d.; Twankay, 2s. 5.; Hyson, 5s. 10d.; Pekor, 3. gd.; Hyson Skin, 28. 3d. per lb. Bohea, 18. 6d.; Congou, 15. 7d. to 28. 11d.; Campoi, 2s. 6d. to 38.; Souchong, 3s. 1d. to 4s. 8d.; Twankay, 2s. 1d. to 3s. 7d.; Hyson, 3s. 9d. to 4s. 2d.; Gunpowder, 5s. 9d. to 6s. per lb. During the years 1828, 1829, and 1830, there were sold at the East India House, 8,000,000 lbs. of Bohca, at an average of 1s. 6d. per lb. Bohea, 1s. 6d.; Congou, 2s.; Twankay, 2s. 2d.; Hyson, 3s. 7d. per lb.

Since 1835, the prices of tea are given for Congou only, and on the 31st December in each year; when prices are low. The tea market is ruled by Congou, as it is the largest description sold; for instance, of 50,991,000 lb. of all sorts of tea delivered in 1846, there were 35,255,000 lbs of Congous. There was no importation of Bohen at all in 1846, In 1835, the whole of the teas, from Congou to Gunpowder (14 in number), averaged 1s. 9d. to 23. 9d. per Ib.; with a stock on hand of 52,750,000 lbs. on 31st December. In 1845, the same teas averaged, at the same period, 11d. to 2s. 3d. per lb.; with a stock on hand of 41,938,000 lb. The difference of price on Congous in December 1844 and 1845 was only 1d. to 2 4. per Ib. decline in the year. On the 31st December 1846, the prices of Congou were 9id. to 2s. 3d. per lb.; stock on hand 48,500,000 lbs.
