The Paris correspondent of the Morn- ing Post writes:-
I have just returned from a visit to
the portion of the American Army that
WHITEAWAY'S
How in France, training under its PRICES ARE SUBSTANTIALLY LOWER THAN
officers, with the help of all expert advice that can be given by the French and the British, to get ready to take its place at the front.
It is common knowledge thuij, a certain number of British - instructors have been, lent to the American Force by the Bri tish Army, and in the afternoon we visited a squad of young officers who' were being trained by British drill ser- geants, The British sergeants live made themselves immensely popular with "the Americans, have been very cordially wel comed by them, and speak with the warost admiration of the splendid material they have the privilege of hand- Hing. When one considers the short period that their training has lasted one is amazed at the physical fitness of the men. The officers are learning lessons. that they will have to impart to the men under them, and one noticed most mar- kedly how thoroughly the training is directed to promoting individuality and to emphasizing in the case of each man that his primary object is to kill Ger. Dana without being himself killed by them.
Much of the drill consists of playing organized games to promote physieni fitness on the one hand and on the other hand. to reduce the reaction period to the minimum. In each brigade the indivi dual is penalized. For the slightest inat- tention and for any slackness, and all the time the British sergeants were there speeding the squad up in every possible way. The most realistic of the games, perhaps, was when the men stood round in their backs to him. Each min with a sergeant in the middle, they had rifle and fixed bayonet, and unex „pectedly the sergeant would touch on, et
and it was for him to show Fo
on how he would attack a stip
enemy in this case the sergeant) whatever the defensive adopted. · Preci sion of bayoneting is being taught making the men stab through a small ring held for them, and as the sergeant Louched sug.or other of the men he fur- ther complicated the problem by telling thens 1 You have no rifle," -or." You have no bayonet," and it was then for
| the man to attuck as best he could.
CAPTURING TRENCHES.
It is in teaching, the men bow to capture a trench that the lesson in Ger-
| man killing is most thoroughly em- phasized. As We saw the work there was a squad of men assembled at the head of trench, and in every recess of it were dummies representing Germans. They crept
ept quietly one by one down the trench, for the theory was that it was a surprise attack, and every detail of their movements was controlled and eriticized. They were shown how to avoid letting their bayonets be
seen, cach man was encouraged to simulate a battle hate as be stuck his German dummy. And the sergeant kept up 孔 running fire Make good
and
of cominent, thus: Boche, and there's no good Boche but a dead Boche." "There are two of them there, one hag got some rum and the other a sandwich, you take the sandwich and I'll have the rum." "Don't make a mistake about it; Fritz is no fool, he'll stick you if you don't stick him," you've got to do is to kill Fritz, as many Frites as you can, That's it (a's a bayonet thrust went home), "pull it out and make a good bayonet of it again," and so on.
"What
yelling a try,
war
At the officers' training ground the trenchus were rather more elaborate than those we saw in the ranks, and the method of attack was also rather more elaborate, The grounds were covered by some 200 yards or more with trenches, harled wire, inevitable dummies representing Ger mana, and so forth. At the word of command the men leapt from their tronch and charged,
nud bayoneting each dummy they came across. Towards the end of the groun
ground there were a number of sticks on tius, and as the men got near the sticks they halted for independent fire and blazed away at the tine, bringing dozens of them down, and eventually carrying the final position with a rash. The accuracy of their re showed how well the lesson had been driven home that not shot must bo wasted, but that each must find its home in the body of an enemy,
AMERICANS' FINE PHYSIQUE.
In a short hurried visit it is not possible to gain more than a few goneral impressions. The first and most striking point is the splendid physical appearance of the men and the obvious robustness of their constitution. Physically they are already perfectly and they are
