937 Hong Kong
Unto the Right Honourable Her Majesty's Secretary of State for the Colonies
I The Memorial
of
Alexander Laski lately Professor of French in the Glasgow Institution now abroad and Felician A. Wolski Teacher of Modern Languages Glasgow his Mandatory.
My Lord,
The Honourable William Napier was one of the Engineers appointed by the Caledonian Railway Company and resided in Glasgow till February last when he removed to Greenock which place he has furtively left within the last few days and is believed to be now somewhere about England
I gave instructions to the Memorialist Alexander Laski as Teacher of Modern Languages and this fees for teaching amount to £18-15/– as can be attested by several holograph Letters from Mr Napier promising payment
To the Memorialist Felician A Wolski has been authorised by holograph Letter under his hand to uplift which sum Alexander Laski
That the said sums are still due and owing
The Memorialists some time ago instituted judicial proceedings for recovery of said sum before the "Sheriff of Renfrewshire" at Greenock and the Defendant entered appearance through a Solicitor evidently with no other view than to obtain delay and to prevent judgment being given until he got out of the Kingdom
That the Memorialists observe from the Gazette of Tuesday 27th April that the said Honourable William Napier has been appointed Clerk to the Works and Civil Expencer for the Island of Hong Kong
That since leaving Greenock the Memorialists have made every inquiry after their Debtor but can find no trace of him they suppose concealing himself from his Creditors and if he be allowed to leave this Country for Hong Kong without satisfying his just debts it is obvious they will be entirely valueless
The Memorialists therefore humbly trust that as the appointment of the Honourable Gentleman is under your Lordship's control Your Lordship will exercise the necessary salutary influence over him so that he may pay his just debts together with the expenses caused by his lateness before leaving Great Britain
Glascow 8th May 1843
My Lord
Your Lordship's Very Obedient and Humble Servants
Felician A. de Wolski
and Alexander de Laski
