St. With reference to the recent cor- respondener in your paper on the above Bubject, could you kindly inform the Service people what has been done in the watter? I understand that the Chamber
of Commerce and the China Association have taken the grievance up, and it seems a great pity that the efforts of "Justice should be fruitless.
In a few days' time the Military rate for the ensuing month will be fixed, and, judging by the present rate of exchange, it cannot be less than 2s. 91d. or 28. 10., so that the subject is getting one of great urgency and seriousness.
By Detober the Services will be practi. cally on half-pay, at the same time pay ing war prices for their various par chases in a place where the recognised standard is tis. and 10 cents 1d. In sending troops to Hongkong to serve their country, who, in the majority of cases, are medically unfitted for service elsewhere due, in some cases, to active service-one can hardly imagine it to be the intention of the War Office to reward these men by putting them on half-pay Heaven forbid the inauguration of any firebrands in the nature of Soldiers' and Workmen's Delegates, but if the efforts of the Chamber of Commerce and China Assobiation are without avail, nothing short of organised action will bave any effect.
