In the course of a lengthy address to the jury. Dr. Cheng said that that was a very extraordinary case. They bad a man charged with the murder of his mother, and they had his own children coming forward and giving evidence against him. If the man had committed the murder then it would be only common justice that his children should give evid ence against him. On the other hand, it the prisoner had not been guilty of the murder it would be a tragedy of tragedies if he were convicted on the evidence of: his own children, Such a happening would be so terrible that it was impos- sible to conceive it, and therefore the jury had to very carefully consider every point and every fact. Dr. Cheng went on to say that the defence had never suggested that the deceased woman fell from the cockloft, and then proceeded to review at length the evidence given on behalf of the Crown. Reviewing the evidence as a whole he contested the point that the changing of the dead woman's clothing by "the deceased pointed to his guilt. The Chinese had great respect for the dead. The accused, he reminded the jury, was found crying by the side of the body, he had not attempted to remove the pools. of blond from the kitchen, and asked, Was that the attitude of a guilty mont Counsel also contended that the relation- ship between the deceased and the ac cused bad always been good. There were a few little quarrels, as there were in most families, but they were quite trivial affairs. The conduct of the accused throughout, be held, had been consistent with innocenco. If he had been a guilty n he would have endeavoured to have got rid of the body, to hide the chopper, and also do away with the Club de Recreio bloodstained thed clothing. He did

THE ACCUSED'S STORY.
At the conclusion of his address Dr. Cheng put the accused in the witness-box. He said that his deceased step-mother was a kind, mother to him. She had really known him from childhood, for he was, her nephew, he was adopted when he was nine years of age, and he was married, when he was sixteen years of age: He had three children. Accused denied
that he had had any serious quarrel with deceased. They had small quarrels some times, his mother accusing him of not
