For the pur- pose of fuel economy cargo ships travel more slowly than mail boats; we imagine, therefore, that in Hongkong mest of the work done will be in connection with the building of“ vessels of the former class. Practical proof has now been given that the Chinese, under proper Eure- pean supervision, can build occas going steamers equal to those constructed in Great Britain. To the majority of people it must appear almost incredible that such accurate and skilled craftsman
as is essential for twentieth century ship as 18 shipbuilding can be obtained from the Chinese. We understand that the main ngines of the Autolycns-such is the name of the new Blue Funnel vessel —were entirely constructed in Hongkong, and that means, of course, that the work manship was. The death took place with tragic sud- denboss on Monday night of Mr. Anibal Puccio, Consul General for Peru in Hoog- kong. The deceased, who was only 47. years of age, was attending to his Consular duties as usual on Monday. About 11 pm, when in his rooms at Kingsclere Hotel, he became suddenly ill, and expired within a few minutes, death being due to heart failure. It was just over a year ago that the late Mr. Anibal Puccio carna to Hongkong from Glasgow, where he had been Consuz General, succeeding Mi Carvaso us Consul General for Peru in Hongkong. supervision, the Chinese can do almost anything General, GORDON left on record his intense admiration for the Chinese soldier who was properly officered, and the industrial ariny seems to be very much like the soldiers of GOLDON. The only problem now remaining to be solved is that relat ing to the provision of the raw material. We can only once again express the hope
that steps will be taken to develop the iron and coal of the province of Awang- tung for if that be done Hongkong will develop rapidly as a shipbuilding contre,
