Extract of a letter from Commute of Audit, dated 6th June 1848.
We have the honor to represent to your Lordships that in reply to a Query from this Office upon the accounts of the Colonial Treasurer at Hong Kong for the year 1845 calling for information respecting deductions which have been made from the gross amount of the Police Tax in the Colony as expenses of Collection, the Vouchers for these expenses have been forwarded for the year ending 30th June 1847, and they are found to include Salaries of a Sub Collector at £75 a year. Salaries of a Sub Collector at £40 a year.
As regards the year to 30th June 1846 these are in addition to the payments of 100 Dollars to each of two Clerks in the Land Department, by whom the Tax had been collected.
