Tomorrow the Bank of China will resume specic payment in Peking. This is authoritatively announced in a man date issued to-night. Such a course, will undoubtedly improve the position of the Government Bank, but it is not so cer- tain that it will enhance the credit of the Bank of Communications, though in some quarters it is abought that the notes of the latter will appreciate as a result. A few days ago they were quoted at 78, which is about the lowest figure they have reached since the embargo was placed on

and specie payment on October 25th. Although the staff was fairly busy throughout the day, there was never any sign of a rush on the part of note-holders to secure cash. In reply to inquiries, Mr. 8. E. Lucas, the Assistant Manager, stated that a total sum of about $700,000 was paid out on the first day, and over $350,000 received back from clients on current account and fixed deposit. Many clients were careful to explain that they were thoroughly convinced of the present strong position of the Bank, but a cer- tain withdrawal of cash was absolutely necessary, as the market was in need of silver and certain Chinese Banks had to redeem their tied up capital. A gratify- ing indication of public confidence in the new management of the institution is the number of foreigners who have opened accounts with the Bank.
