The old town is situated on a rocky promontory jutting outs into the sea and rising to a height of soun 300 e above sea-level. It reminds one strange of Capatan Hill, Ilfracombe. On the sum- mit of this is the old Citadel, connected with the mainland by a fire aqueduct dating from the days of the Roman The anal bay to the west affords good anchorage and shelter for a limited squadron, and along its ghores ataud the various tobacco fac tories, the property of all nations, for Kavala has been for many years thei centre of the Turkish tobacco trade. With the exception of the few hundred ccamo- titan employees of the tobacco companies The population of the new town is Greek, || of the old town furkan, possibly sme 30,000 in all,

During the first phase of the Balkan War Kavala was occupied by a Bulgarian force without any opposition on the part of the Turks, but on the outbreak of war between Greece and Bulgaria in the sumer of 1913 the Bulgarians were driven out of Kavala without difficulty No attempt was made to destroy the tobacco factories or to pillage the ware- houses,

Probably the Bulgarians felt that as the Imperial Tobacco Company of Great Britain and the American Tobacco Company were the richest pro- prietors it was politic to proservo dis

the cipline amongst their troops, for neighbouring towns of Drama and Seres the vilest cruelties were practised."

The Grecks have inherited their dis- taste for road-making from their Turkish predecessors, for, as we have learnt at Salonika, Macedonia is sadly lacking in On

all means of communication. There is one

fair rond leading out of Kavala to the north, connecting the town with the railway at Drama. It winds up the hill along the site of the cobbled Roman road ap which St Paul toiled on his way to Philippi Thero is also a short stretch of rond leading out of the town to the east towards the Bulgarian frontier on the River Mesta. Along this road reinforce ments will be exposed to the fire of our men-of-war

The Drama road runs through a very fertile country, dotted over with rich tobacco farms as well as with valuable cornfields. In Kavala itself there is ab this moment probably a million pounds worth of tobacco leaves, and as the Central Powers are feeling the pinch of poverty so far as cigarettes are concerned, it is probable that this raid is more for the purpose of obtaining supplies of tobaces that for any serious military reason t

TWO POSSIBLE SUBMARINE VASES. As a base for submarine craft to set against the Allied Flects in the Mediter ranean in the present war Kavala is valueless. The submarines would have to be dispatched from Germany u sections by rail through Adrianople and Dede- agatch, thence to Drama and down the metalled road from Drama by motor wagons to be put together at Kavala and take the water there. The whole route from Dedeagatch is exposed to attack by our aircraft, and the long descent from the crest of the hill to the north of Kavaja would be plastered by fire from our Fleet, rendering the passage of moters down the zigzag anything but pleasant.

It is Enown that the Bulgarians have had their eye on the lake near Port Lagos, known as the Bura Gal, as a sub marice base in preferense to Kavala. The I thoroughly well sheltered, and. the rail runs round the northern shorca, where there is a good water supply for troops and workmen, a desideratum lack ing at Kevala. With a view of develop- ing the capabilities of the Buru Goot the Bulgarians in 1913 commenced the con struction of a railway from Philippopolis through Stanimaks, there over the Chepelarska Planina, to Buk, midway between Xanthi and Drama, thus avoid-) ing the coast railway in Deileagateli. How far this line has progressed since the outbreak of war we have ing means of knowing, but as the earthworks had well progressed in the spring of 1914 it is quite possible that trains are Bow run- wing over a portion of the line at any rate, and that motor trifle is feasible the whole way.

The occupation of Kavala by a large force is out of the question; every ounce of food must be brought over the hills to the north, exposed to the fire of our ships, or along the shore road from Sarikaban, a fonte equally vulnerable. Fuel also must be brought into the town as well as water. The springs to the west are close to the sea and within easy range.
