Acceptance threatened, as Mr. BONE. Law said at the time, the ruination of the political careers of those who entered the Cabinet, because the tide of fortune in the war could not be expected to turn for one time and they would inevitably share in the responsibility and discredit which was already attaching to the Government when they joined it. On the other hand, had they driven the Liberals out of office they could not have carried on the direction of affairs with out a general election, which would have revived old hostilities in the House of Commons and created a situation in which it would have been utterly impos sible to concentrate the whole energies of the country upon the successful prose cution of the war, Who can doubt that tho wiser and nobler course was taken, or that, once it was taken, it was the bounder duty of the Unionist Ministers to throw heart and soul into the work YEA they had undertaken, rather than, as some suggested adopt a critical attitude. towards their colleagues? Most people will agree, we think, that the results have fully justified Mr. BONAR LAY'S decision. The national machine has run since with a minimum of friction. Not only has the output of munitions leon enormously accelerated, but, by general consent, a measure of conscription has been carried which the Liberals inight not have dared to introduce because of opposition in their own ranks, and which the Unionists could not have forced upon the country without creating a wide- spread revolt." At the same time Trades Union regulations have been suspended, with the concurrence of the working classes, in the interests of our Armies in the field, though any attempt on the part of a Union st Administration to interfere with them would have been suspect and fiercely resisted. Those-and they were many who acoffed at the Government for not imitating the

A Chinese who was charged wh bety with violence in Hollywon.. pleaded guilty.
For the Crown, Mr. G. H. Wakeman said prisoner was bet only charged with larceny from the person of a boy but he also threw pupper in the boy's face.
