SETTLEMENT PROBABLE.

POSITION OF LUNG,

(From Our Spécial Representative.)

CANTON, Friday.

To-day more than half the shops in th City are open, and the streets are very busy. In the main sircets all the doors of shops and stores are open and a fair mum ber of customers are 'abont. There is no attempt to display many goods yet, and here and there you meet with half-a-dozen shops in a row completely closed and Commercial The with shutters up. Guild has sent out circulars and publish

newspapers asking ed notices in the people to resume business and to open their shops. The opinion is general that a settlement is probable" and that. Luk will come to Canton within the next few clays,

The new Civil Governor has not yet been here long enongir.to do much, and the resul of the infervisw between Luk's refiresentative and Lang is not known. Also, there is no word of the result of the conference at Shin Hing, where, re- presentatives of the Central Government met Shum. Li, and Lak. Optimism is the prevailing hole. however, and mer- chants are looking forward to a resuing. Con of business.

There was a good deal of rifle-fije last night around Slek-Wai-Tong and further up the river; but there does hot appear to have been any active fighting and possibly midnight robbers were the cause of the noise. The positions of the dif- ferent forces are unchanged.
