search over the Daily Pres of *1912 verifies my stateinent, that his appoint- as professor was not publicly ment announced

Is there any wonder, then, that. Professor Smith seems to overlook such an appointment 7-

As Mr. Hinton is not prepared to argue the point any further, 1 need not encroach any more, upon your space,~ Yours faithfully,

PERING NOTES. FROM OUR OWN CORRESPONDENT]

PEKINO, 20th June.

·TUE DEAD PRESIDENT.

Yesterday witnessed the removal ju state of the dead President route to his ancestral home. The funeral proces sin was simple, dignified and effective, To those who came out expecting great sight it was very disappointing. Many a more elaborate funeral could be sorms any day passing down. Hatame it

There was a very elaborats cremory within the Palace on Monday, when the President offered up sacrifice before the bier. This service was attended by most of the foreign Ministers and high Chinese officials, and was very impres sive indeed;

The funeral was remarkable by reason of the number of foreigners who took part, President Li Yuan Hung witnessed the removal of the eatafalque from its rest ing place, but did not join the mourners The bodyguard of the deceased looked a fine body of men, and the soldiers, who marched with rifles reversed were smart and business-like. Perhaps the most interesting feature of the funeral was its westernised incidentals-the crage bands on the arms of the military and naval men; the exhibition of the uni form, sword and decorations of the de- ceased; the mournful western music; and the appearance in the procession of: Yuan's two ponies--not to speak of the “kodakers" and the cinema operators.

CABINET MAKING..

The South seem to have won all along the line. They played a trump card this week in the declaration of independence by the Navy, but, of course, such prac tices are not without their danger, espe- cially when constitutional procedure is the great consideration.". Whether the impetus was given by the action of the Navy or was due to the freedom afforded by the removal of the dead President from the capital is not quite apparent, but the President has to day issued a mandate restoring the Nanking Pro visional Constitution. As this coincides with a list of resignations of members of the old gang," it is obvious that the

KICKING CONSTABLE.

An Indian constable ebarged coolis with assaulting him. His story was that defendant pushed him, that he fell down, tore his clothes and cut his leg. The coolie said he was sitting on the footpath when the constable came along and kicked him. He made haste to go but was not quick enough to suit the constable, who aimed another kick at him. Unfortunate ly for him, it missed its mark and so great was the power the constable put behind his kick that the impetus caused him to fall on the ground. His worship (Mr. Wood) said he thought the coolie was telling the truth, and he would be dis- charged.
