A SERIES OF SUGGESTIONS,
[TO THE EDITOR OF THE "HONGKONG DAILY PILESS"]
Sin, So many valuable suggestions have been made in your columns lately
for the improvement of the Colony And the spending of other people's money that I vonture to suggest linking up some of the schemes.
Various perfervid patriots, claiming a monopoly of Clear Vision and Sense, but apparently, lacking in fore- sight and proportion have waxed righteously indignant at the idea of any one spending money un any object other thau War Charities as defined by them.
My learned friend Mr. Wilkinson is anxious that we all should subscribe our savings to a 6 per cent, local War Loan, a Dost excellent scheme if Government will guarantee interest and loss on ex- change (in the F.M.S. exchange is fixe! I believe, making their loan sterling)..
Let the patriots be logical and give up all luxuries pendente bells in favour of the War Loan.
We cannot all of us, for various, reasons, follow the advies of our King, "Mr, Spectator" and "Roderick Random" and down glasses" potil the end of the war, but no one will, I irangine, maintain that club bars, cocktails, liqueurs and drinks between meals generally are any thing but mere luxuries.
I disagree with Believer" in rolu. Although not learned in thrology, I can- not for the life of me see any sign of heresy in the very sensible remarks of the two correspondents named. The charge of ignorance because they advo ceted subscriptions for purposes which have arisen in consequence of the War is disproved by the act of the Committee War Funds. of the Y.M.C.A. in agreeing to invest in
I have no objection to **Believer " classing himself as a pigny, but, I have & faint recollection of being told that we were torented in the range of the Almighty, *Believer,” in attempting to drive home a point, has wandered beyond the four corners of the Book!
The Bible will guide ine "--I can almost hear Believer" thundering this
in my search for His behests," but perhaps your correspondent will give me chapter and verse wherein it is recorded that subscribing to a YM.CA. building in Hongkong counts more for righteous ness than contributing towards assisting an Empire, and thus, incidentally, the Y.M.CA. the world over.
1 confess to betting now and again on anything, and if Believer" can pro- duce a quotation proving the above I will subscribe $100 in the Y.M.C.A.
building, provided that, if the quotation
be not fomid, he will contribute half that

The strongest opponents of the scheme have been content to object on the ground. of inexpediency alone; the good work of the TM.C,A. has been admitted. If

OTHER WAR CHARITIES. H16 EXCELLENCE-We have now, gentle." en, by the resolution passed, decided to make the Royal Flying Corps Hospital the principal object of our efforts, but.. there are many other war charities on behalf of which requests for donations have been received by us. The names of these charities will now be published, and if any person wishes his subscription or donation to be earmarked for any one or more of those charities we will of course so earmark it, and renitsaccord ingly to the
