SATURDAY'S STORM.
Saturday's dust storm was the fiercest for many a year. The wind blew with hurricane force, stripping the foliage from
the trees, scattering the beautiful peach and plum blossora, and carrying dust everywhere. Discomfort was everywhere apparent. One curious result was that the storm liberated fluff, presumably from cotton plants, and as this was blow about it gave the effect of a stage snow storm.
EARLY SUMMER. -
Summer has come unusually early this year. This week we have been sweltering in temperature approaching and even exceeding three figures. The consequent change of clothing has been very sudden, and those who last week were still wearing winter costumes have now had to recog nise that summer has come.

company's employ.
Mr. Godfrey (for the plaintiff) argues that this was a new contract and the money was payable at any time on his leaving the employ, wherever he went to

the line. In many cases of this nature it JOINT SERVICE OF THE HONGKONG. CANTON AND MACAJ is clear, whether an entirely new agres ment has been made, the old agreement stands subject to modifications, but here it is not so, though in the view. I take of this case, it is not necessary for mu to decide that point--for in either event the plaintiff must win. If it were a new contract, the allowancf in lieu of return- passage will be paid on leaving the employ-that language is clear; and the amount of the allowance has to ho proved. Here he has proved what it was fixed at "under his agreement of June, 1911-1hat is the only evidence before me. If, on the other hand, the original went stood, subject to such edifications as were made in July, 1914, then one of the modifications made referred to the payment of this allowance. It was now to be on leaving the employ instead of on leaving Shanghai, and I hold that that modification of the original agree men: acts as a rescission of the terms in the original agreement on which he was 10 get this allowance. Nothing would have been easier than for the defendants to say that this payment was to be sub- ject to the terms of the original agree ment. That was not done and judgment mast be given for the plaintiff with costs,
holder. Writing off plant account is heavier than last year, and must neces sarily be so, és we have added consider ably to that account during the year. We have also to bear in mind that when the new station and plant is completed some of the Diesel plant at present in use will have become too small for remodel aling to suit the intended change in periodicity and phase, and will have to ?-- 9 be disposed of and, though it has been down for under 10 years, many fetch very 9-2 || little. The sound position in which the Company is to-day is in a very large 3-6 mensure due to the liberal writing down 38 of our plant, a policy which the share- 7holders have always endorsed, and will, I trust, continue to de. During the year 83 we purchased a property in Sutherland Street, where we can erect a sub-station and equipment. The buildings on same will have to be pulled down, and new ones, erected.
That accounts for a very 52-47 large proportion of the amount written off new property account. The bonus to staff has been well earned, and I feel cer- tain shareholders will not grudge it. During the year there has been a welcome Increase in demand for current for light ing and power purposes. We have at present 816 h.p of motors connected up, A and our increase in this over last year represents 443,000 units more used. This, I feel sure, is bound to go on in- creasing as time goes on, As in previous years, when your directors considered it advisable, they have made a reduction in the charge for current for lighting pur- poses, and this takes effect from It May. The reduction from 24 cents to 20 cents per unit is considerable one, and one which, no doubt, consumers will appre || ciate. Should our output not increase over last year's, the concession means reduction in revenue of about 8130,000, bence the reason for the large carry forward. We have, however, started this year well, and I think there is no reason why we should not look for further demand for our current. The reclama tion at our new site is progressing favorably, but I fim sorry to have to say that, owing to the lamentable war still It is proposed by the Kubara Mining Beat Lieut.
