A SUCCESSFUL EXHIBITION. The Dog and Cat Show held at Happy Valley on Saturday afternoon was un- deniably a success. The entries in the dog shion, though not nearly 80er- ous as on the occasion of the last show, were of a high standard on the whole. and in some of the classes the judges had no easy task to select the champion. This remark applies with special force to the clames for Toys, Pugs, and Dachs hunds. The organisers of the show were fortunate in being able to secure tite services of about the best judges avail- able. There must inevitably be some fittle dissatisfaction among dog fanciers. who believe their own particular dog to be the best of his class and Bad the judges are not necessarily of the same opinion, but on the whole the judging gave little Had the ground for real discontent. Committee heen able to institute the pari-matuel system, as was originally intended, it is probable that there would have been one or twr surprises, how ever. Opinión regarding the qualifien-Sergeant Pict. tions of the various dags in the Chow cinus especially appeared to vary consid -erably, ami some surprise was censioned when it was found that a very young dog, Mrs. Chatham's Peter Pipkin," hast gained prester hours. Mrs. Wake man's Nigger" attracted a good dent of attention, and was a hot favourite.. white Ms Wilden's Peter" was con sidered to have an excellent chance of gaining, second prize. Peter Pipkin." however, was an exceptionally well-built dog, with a pretty hend.
In the Dachshunds, there was very little to choose between the first three, and Dr. Gibson must have found it dif ficult to discriminate. The youngest, competitor, Mr. Bolles' Dutts." was awarded chief honours in the class.
Mr. D. Cow's Bobby" was a popu- Jar winner in the Fox Terrier (smooth) -class, with Mr. Frank
running him very "B" |
Mrs Jordan's ng gained the Cham- pionship honours of the entire show dogs, while Mr. D. Logan-a very successful exhibitor, who took all prizes in the Aberdeen Ternier class-claimed the Championship for the best bitch with his
Aberdeen,!!
In the Ca: section Mrs. Gegg's Em press Josephine gained pride of place for Persian Cais, while Mrs. Evan Ormiston's Peterkin" was champion in the Siamese class, Two Sianese kit-. tena belonging to Mr. Kinghorn were sold by auction by Mr. Gegg for the benefit of the Blue Cross Fund, and found ready purchasers in Mr. V. K. Bjerre and Mr C Champkin, at $20- __stach,

Its
Sir WM. REES DAY ES said it had given his wife the greatest possible pleasure to distribute the awards that day. He con- gratulated the exhibitors, and particu Jarly the Committee, on the great success the show had achieved. In Hongkong we were a sporting community, and amongst other things we were very fond of dogs. A dog was perhaps a man's best friend, and he congratulated Hongkong as a whole on the most excellent show that they had witnessed that day. success was due in the first place to the efforts of the Committee who brought about the show, and, in the main, as he was informed by the members of the Committee, to Hon. Fretary Mr. Gegg. Applause.) Mr. Gegg had shown great energy in perfecting the arrangements for that show, and he was sure that he was paying Mr. Gegg no idle compliment when he said that his efforts had been. crowned with the greatest success. (Applause)
At the call of the Chief Justice three cheers were given for the Hon. Secretary.

The Chartered Bank of India, Austra lia, and China has done splendidly from the standpoint of service with the Colours Out of a total of 15 men on the staff of the London office no fewer than 96 either have joined the Forces or have been attrated as Derby recruits One officer, Lieut Malcolm Henderson has already won distinction in the Air Service
Lieences will be given to bring forward cargo of the following classos:(a) Cargo which is British property; (b) cargo which is enemy property but is under hen to some approved bank; (c) cargo which is enemy property but which at the outbreak of war, was under lion to some approved bank, the lien of which has since been satisfed by the consignee... In this connection it must be pointe out that cargo is not necessarily British property because it is consigned to a British firm. Where the cargo has been financed by bills which have been nego- tiated by a bank, and the bank bold the shipping documents, the property almost certainly remains in the chippets sad if the shipuer has become an enemy by reason of the outbreak of war, the cargo is enemy property. The scentanci or payment of the bills by the consignees after the outbreak of war has not the effect of passing the property from the shippers to the consignees, so that oven if the bills have been paid the cargo 11 still enemy property.
