the Colony and sing.

Assigning Tickets to each.

Collecting all Revenue from tukeased Lands and

Villages ; Cultivated land, Squatters, and House, Rents.

Numbering all Houses throughout the Colony. Taking a Yearly Census of the population. Enforcing the Regulations connected with those duties

as a

Magistrate.

His Excellency having kindly informed that it is probable that this Department will be entirely dispensed with, and permitting

me to state any Services and Claims for further employment in the Public Service, I beg most respectfully to submit,

That during my position

(a residence of 5 Years

this Colony), all my leisure time has been devoted to the study of the Chinese Language,

That I have performed the duties of a Police Magistrate and Registrar General for upwards of three Years

without the aid of an Interpreter, where Chinese only is spoken.

That my Services to Government have

been Officially acknowledged, in the strongest

manner on several occasions.

That I am one of few individuals, two of whom

are since dead, who by subscribing to the Superannuation Fund, bound themselves to Government Service in this healthy Colony, while their Constitution should hold out, or until disabled, or further notice; that in being permitted to join this Fund I was under the impression that it was a tacit acknowledgment by Government that my health for continued employment in this Colony would enable me to expect precedence of those

junior Officers who declined to join the Fund, and thereby practically expressed a resolve to remain in Government Employ, only so long

as suited their own convenience;

to undertake

my ability the duties, and fitness for the Officer being duly weighed I have now in these 3 Months of 5 years Service: 8½ Years
