be dispensed with.

A Gentleman in the

capacity of Mr. Cleverly is however requisite for the purpose

of repairing the Public Buildings that are in existence, and for

the maintenance and repairs of the Roads, Streets, and Bridges, as well as for the planning

and

construction of others that may from time to time become necessary. To this Gentleman also I propose entrusting the collection of the Land Revenue, should the office of Colonial Treasurer be abolished. I

therefore, with great respect, suggest that Mr. Cleverly be

in his present Office.

The Registrar-General's

Office may be abolished, and its duties transferred to the

Chief Magistrate's Office at

an expense of £300 per annum, instead of

£850 as at present; but in this case, Mr. English may be thrown out of employ. He has been 9 years

and 9 months in Government Service; is a Superannuation Contributor to the Superannuation Fund, speaks the Chinese language, and is, in fact, a valuable Officer.

The Colonial Surgeon at present receives £600 per

annum. His duties might possibly be

entrusted to some

member of the Staff
