The Surveyor General's Department is altogether unnecessary scale, in regard to the staff of which it is composed. Nearly all the Public Buildings necessary for the Establishments have been completed; in fact, as far as I am aware, nothing remains to be constructed but a new Government House. There is some difference of opinion here, as to whether extensive Buildings of this description could be most advantageously undertaken by the Civil or Military Department. I believe Mr Cleverly, the Surveyor-General, is perfectly competent to the duty, and I am satisfied that he could execute the work as cheaply as the Royal Engineer Department; but nevertheless, (that I have) with reference to the reductions proposed in this Department, I am disposed to think that the erection of all large and expensive Buildings had better be entrusted to the Royal Engineer Department, who can be paid proper remuneration
