Lient. R. McMurray, R.N.B of allowing their launch to be capsized. I believe, however, that more stringent rules in torpedo-boat, said he was proceeding are now being applied as to the number of passengers allowed on board. Chinese law, ay at present constituted, does not call upon the State lo interfere. A sin against individuals even involving death does not of itsof junve authorities to meddle with the matter if no definite appeal is made by the injured parties. Only in ensee of ain ning against the State does the State tako up the cudgels in self-defence, and the punishment is then as severe as possible Appeal has been made in the local Press for public aid to the sufferers.

AN OPPORTUNE ORACULAR VÍTERANCE. The following order was issued by an ido] medium recently: Tonight le no -one go to the river to draw water, to- morrow let no one go to the river to wash clothes. You had better not frequent the o'd market to buy vietuals; go to the -new-market because the old is infected with plague." This oracle 'came very oppor. tunely for the new market, for it helped to give it a start in life. 1. fear the medium was prejudiced. YARN MARKET.

Messrs Polishwalla & Kotwall, cotton and yarn brokers, in their report dated March 8th state that the improvement foreshadowed in their last report, which was dated the 24th ult, has unfortunately given way to a feeling of despondency, and although rates have not undergone may remarkable change, they have to record a dull and uninteresting fortnight, for which the continued strife and uprisings in the interior are responsible,

The depreciation set aside for machinery 'is on the basis of 6 per cent, per autum

which your general managers consider res sonable,

No. 1 niit buildings, which are of brick, are being written down 5 per cent, but is has not been thought necessary to depre ciate the buildings of Nos. 2 and 3 mills, as they are of concrete and have only been in operation for a few months.

The land required for the Nos. 2 and 3 pills and the wearing shed was purchased. from my firm with certain buildings. Some of these, valued at The 29.728, were demo- lished, and the auditors rightly require this amount to be written off in the course of a few years. Subject to your approval, Tis, 10.000 is being provided this year for this purpose: Tls 1,499.50 from working account and T. 8,600.50 from premium

on shares.

ན་

Of the 95,000 ordinary shares offered to the public only 5,719 shares were originally applied for but subsequently further ap plications were received for the balance, and a large number of shares was issued a

a premium of 5 and 10 per cont, with the result that the company had a profit of Tls. 8,500.50,

A first and final enll of Ts, 3 per share un the 25.000 ordinary shares I have just alluded to was made payable on December 31st-at that date T. 67,983 had been re- erived, and I am pleased to say that the present entstanding is only T, GOD I take this opportunity of reminding share- holders who have not you paid the call that interest at the rate of 10 per cent. per an is being charged on all amounts that are overdue,

Only 627 preference shares were applied for by the public, d Mosers. Jardine, Matheson & Co., Ltd, under their agree ment with the Company, took up the re- maining 4,473.

Considering the present cost of machin ery, shareholders may rest assured that they have an exceptionally cheap spinning plant. These remarks also apply to the reinforced concrete buildings, which, if contracted for to-day, would cost 70 to 50. per cent, more, owing to the very high price of steela

With the approval of the consulting committee, your general managers have purchased 410 looma-116 locally and 200 frein Massrs Livesey & Sons and I be lieve that this addition, which was not contemplated when the company was float- et, will materially assist us in futuro years, The 116 jooms purchased locally have been in operation since November, and I am pleased to say that this production has been well received.

The 300 looms purchased for shipment from England should have been despatched by: the end of August, but, owing to Gov- ernment demands on the makers, we have so far only received invoices for 190 loogs, 20 of which have recently come into opera tion,

I think is desirable lo mention that the general managers, who have a very large interest in this company, ore providing the necessary capital for the weaving plant: at bank rate of interest, believing as they do that it will pay a satisfactory return on the money invested.
