between the sum voted last-year viz £25,000 and that proposed by his Predecessor £34,200, being £9200, or much of it, may be absolutely necessary to meet the engagements for which the Government pledged their faith. In another letter of this day's date, I have stated to you the actual saving on Salaries of the Establishments previously estimated for amounting to £272, amounting to £337, or a sum not required.

I am to request that you will state to the Lords Commissioners of the Treasury that upon full consideration of all these circumstances, Lord Grey is disposed to think that the best course will be to apply to Parliament for a vote of the same amount of £25,000 which was granted last year. The effect of this will be to leave the Governor a sum of £14,553 for Public Works.
