ASSOCIATION FOOTBALL.

CHALLENGE SHIELD COMPETITION.

ARTILIMRYMEN ELIMINATED. The Royal Engineers had the sublime Batisfaction on Saturday of eliminating their great rivals, the R.G.A,, from the Shield Competition, and of pressing into the semi-final round, winning a game of varying fortunes by two goals to love. The win was almost as surprising as was that of the Club over the Artillery in the semi- final last season. The very large number of onlookers witnessed # really fine game. Both sides were intensely keen, and the game was fought at an exeredingly smart pace.

There was carcely a dull moment throughout, and occasionally the passages provoked great excitement..

The Engineers were completely outplay- ed in the first quarter of an hour, and a score by the Artillerymen always seemed imminent. Scott and Coxon at back, bow- ever, tackled and kicked cleanly and judi- ciously, and allowed very few shuts to get to Rogers, Eventually, both custodians had to fist sharply sway, and the ball travelled from end to end with ninusual rapidly. There were exciting struggles in frout of each goal, and Hortop in parti- cular very narrowly missed the mark. The game grew in interest and excellence and there was a fitting culmination to the first period when Youngman burst through and shot hard for the corner, bringing Rogers. to his knees to saves The rebound was taken on the run by Lovelock, who banged the ball with tremendous force against the xide of the post from 10`yards' range.

The second half commenced with another exciting incident. The ball came in from the extreme right, struck the cross-bar of the Artillerymon's charge, and almost ran along the bar to fall at the feet of two of the Engineers forwards. A mere push would have sufficed to get the ball past Gibson, but the glorious chance went begging. The Engineers were infusing much more vigour and earnestness into their play, and for a time their opponent socmed almost demoralised by their quick, sudden rushes and long passing. It was during this period of restless effort that the RE, opened their account. Townsend, who, with his partner (White), had been porforming exceedingly well, shot with much force from long range,

Gibson ap- parently misjudged the height, for he fail- ed to hold the hall and it went over his fingers into the goal. This shock caused the Gunnera to put more fire into their hitherto somewhat spirities endeavours, but the bottling up of Swan, who has rarely been so completely eclipsed, showed rather painfully how much his colleagues depend upon him for their goals. Young. man worked extremely hard, as did Love

CONTRACTS

WITH GERMAN ÚBMS. IMPORTANT JUDGMENT IN THE

COURT OF APPEAL.

An important judgment was delivered in the Court of Appent on December 21st on a question that affects Britain's trade position after the war.

The Zinc Corporation, who carry on business at Broken Hill, Australia, con tracted to supply Messrs, Mirsch and Son, of Halberstadt, Germany with between 355,000 and 385,000 tons of zinc concen Crates. A clause in the contract provided that in the case of war the agreement should be merely suspended until peace, not cancelled, The corporation asked for a declaration that the contract was wholly abrogatod. A

Mr. Justice Bray had decided that the contract was void, and the Court of Appeal upheld his decision.

It is about time," said Lord Justice Swinfen-Eady." that steps wore taken to alter the policy of saving up for the benefit of alion enemies rights under con tracts which will enable them on the signing of peace, at once to regain the command of the markets of this country;

It was intimated that the case might be taken to the House of Lorde,
