The case was resumed at the Magistracy It cannot be denied that some uneasi yesterday, before Mr. F. A. THE MONARCHY.
Evideners are not lacking that the monarchical programme is still being car ried out with that regard for detail which the Chinese love. Ceremonies, musie seals, flags, etiquette and the hundred and ondertetnals required for the proper performance of the enthronement, of Yuan Shib Kai are receiving attention, and shere seems little reason to doubt that
before two more months have passed over our heads the people will be celebrating the uscension of the dragon throne by the Great President.

their chosen representatives their voles in fav our of a monarchy, and next day I form ed on of a party at foreigners, who watched the proceedings in the old House of Parliament when the Meriterious Per sons and the Scholars exercised the privi- lege of the franchise. There was little
to hold the attention, and one soon direc of watching men enter the had, wrte something on a card, walk to the table, and drop it into a box, afterwards retir. ing with a green card in their hands. O course, there were plenty of soldiers in evidence at the entrance, in the ball, in the galleries, and even on the City Wall overlooking the building. Not even the polite invitation received from th Foreign Office would induce me to attend next day to watch the counting of the votes. Still, everything went well, as it has done since the inauguration of the
