-VOLUNTEER OFFICERS

DECORATED.

SPEECH BY H.E. THE GOVERNOR

The officers and mon of the Hongkong Volunteers and Volunteer Reserve paraded on the Cricket Ground last evening, when Major D. Macdonald and Captain G. P Lammort were presented with the Colonial Auxiliary Forces Officers Decoration (V.D.) by His Excellency the Governor. The pande which was very strong nu- merically, was inspected by His Excellency. who was accompanied by HE. the General Officer Commanding (Major- General F. Ventris), Lieut.-Colonel Ties R.G.A., also being present,

HIS EXCELLENCY THE GOVERNOR, address- the parade, which was formed up in a bollow square, scid it afforded him peculiar. pleasure to come there that alternoon to present the Colonial Auxiliary Forces Officers' Decoration—which, as they knew. was granted for 20 years' commissioned service because he had served with both the recipients as a member of the Volun teer Force from 1893 to 1886. When Major Macdonald was promoted Lieutenant he (the Governor) served under him, and when he (the Governor), became a sergeant, Captain Lammert was in his section. His Excellency continued. “I have alluded to any services in the Volunteers. Those were the days when there was no Volunteer Reserve. I know that I have been called the father of that fine body of men. At one time 1 wanted to give that proud distinction to Sir Matthew Nathen, but you have grown into such a splendid body that I can no longer deny myself the plea. Aure of pleading guilty to the soft impeach- ment." His Excellency emphasised the value of the Valunteers and the Beserves. to the Colony, and reiterated that it was because of the numbers and efficiency of the Force that Major-General Kelly, and | after him Major-General Ventris, had been able to spare a considerable number of the garrison troops for service at the Frant.

Major Macdonald and Captain Lammert then marched up to His Excellency, wh pished the medals on their breasts.

"MAJOR MACDONALD,

Major Macdonald joined the Corps in 1884, when a new section of the Fiel Battery was raised in Kowloon Dock, he that time on the staff of the bring t Hongkong and Whampoa Dock Company They raised two guns, seven pounters, andl were known as the Left Section. Major Macdonald joined the new section as a private, but in the same year he was pro- moted to the rank of Sergeant. At that time the strength of the Corps was between 80 and 100 men all told. The Commanding Offeer w Capt. McCullan, and among those connected with the Corps then and who are still doing service Major Mac donald recalls Col, Chapman, V.D., Capt.. Lammert, Capt. Armstrong, and Pte. R. Melbourne, the latter being in the Infari try. It was a few years after this that Mr. Logan, the popular G.O.M. of the Corps, joined up.
