CORONATION OF THE EMPEROR OF JAPAN.
THE EMPEROR OF JAPAN has been crowned
Japan had yet found union, and suggest ed that the country would continue to be forn by internal troubles. The Saigo rebellion, however, was the last attempt to obtain possession of the Emperor's person, and from that time the growth of loyalty has continued uninterrupted, until to-day the Emperor's position as spiritual and temporal ruler of the country is firmly established. More especially is it on the spiritual side that the growth of the Imperial idea has been manifested. The solemn rites at Kyoto, which we have de scribed as a coronation ceremony, in reality partake of the nature of a religious cere menial-a communion between the Im perial ancestors and their divine descend ant. The Emperor being the highest in the land both spiritually and temporally, no hand can crown him. He combines in his own person the attributes of Pope and Emperor, and he enters into his heritage not by divine right coming from others but by his own divinity.
