CHINESE CREW OF "INVERIC" CHARGED AT MARINE COURT.

AT NEW YORK.
“I consider this a most important test case for British articles," said Commander Beckwith, R.V., in giving judgment in A case at the Marine Court on Saturday in which the Chinese erew of the str. Inveric were charged with unlaw. fully disobeying the lowful com. mands of the Captain and fusing to do duty, thereby impeding the navigation of the ship, and the progress of the voyage, in New York harbour on August 18th."
Capt. Alexander Wallace, in giving evi- dence, said that the Chinese crew were

The concluding meeting of the season, which took place on Saturday, was favour ed with ideal racing weather, but the at tendance of the general public was any thing but good. Hacing was always at signed on. et Glasgow on December 14th,ctive, there being fairly large fields, and at least two very exciting finishes, but 1914, and all of the articles were under there seemed to be a surprising lack of With one exception stood by the meri, They worked contented real racing interest, ly until August 5th, when they told him the fancied ponies come up to expects tions, but there are many who will favour that unless the wages of the crew were James Pigg for one or other of the big increased by £1 10%. per sailer, and £1. 156. events in race week. The details were as follow:--- eertain OX LIEL pay they would re- fuse duty, and the complaint was referred Home to this owners. Eventually, on August 10th. the boatswain and the No. 1 Freman came to him at 7p.m. and told him that all the men had knocked off, and that unless they got extra wages no more work would be done, He then fell the men in and asked them if they understood what they were doing. They all, with the exception of the firemen, refused to work unless they were promised in writing that the extra money asked for would be granted next day, and then the boatswain and the No. 1 fireman interviewed the British Con- sul. After this was done the crew worked on in satisfactory manner, until he arrived at Singapore.
Corroborative evidence was given by Chief Engineer H. D. Mitchell, and Chiof Offer A. Sauter.
Replying to Commander. Beckwith the boatswain and the No. 1 fireman said that if the extra money had not been granted they would have all worked on the same as before.
In giving judgment, Commander Beck- with said:
"I consider this a most important test articles. These mon CASO for British charged were signed on in a British ship at Glasgow, where the articles were fully explained to them. They apparently work ed contentedly until August 5th when the ship was then unloading in New York har hour. There they combined together and refused duty unless they got certain con- siderable increases of wages, Owing to the difficulties of dealing with a Chinese wrew on board British ships in that port, Had to prevent indefinite delay for the ship, this payment was granted to the crew. But, smart though they were, they forget that British law is long enough to

I find that the defendants were guilty of continuing to refuse duty on the 10th August in New York harbour, and by this act impeded the progress of the -voyage; the ship was working night and day to leave for China. As the boatswain and the No. 1: fireman were the ringleaders of the plot, I sentence them both to two months hard labour, the expenses of their imprisonment, up to the sum of £3, to be paid out of their wages. The remainder of the crew charged on this sheet will each be sentenced to fourteen days hard labour, and the cost of their imprisonment is to be paid out of their wages.

HONGKONG "B" TOO GOOD FOR KOWLOON "A"
Though there can be but one opinion, that the Club were the better team, it must be said that the Clubmen have played mucti bettor. There was absence of method, of sympathetic under- standing at critical moments between the defence and the attack, and of that whole-hearted co-operation that is 60 Most probably o essential to goal-getting
It Was the hearty bustling of the oeppers and the readiness to get men. The latter do not seem to be able well in that disconcerted the Club-
quickly to accommodate their tactics to tnose of their opponents. Adaptability counts. for much. The Sappers halves got the ball so frequently with their fead that it became painfully noticeable at times. dtil the Engineers' defence was not by any means impenetrable, for Rogers got quite a lot to do on the other hand, Gardner was not called upon to save a single shot.
