Dr. Gahagan declares that it has been most successful; in fact, several cures have been effected.
A short time agu Dr. Gahagan had a nine-hole course faid out on the hospital grounds, in pursuance of his theory that kindness and granting of liberties form the most effective cure for mental ills. He believed that the out-of-door exercise and the competition of golf would have aa amazingly beneficial effect in clearing the mental haze of his patients, and he has proved his theory to be correct. The course is now in almost constant use the patients.
"When my golf treatment is carefully considered," he says, "it is evident that after all it is not such a freakish method of curing insanity, as in other directions physicians acknowledge quite as simple methods have had most far-reach- ing resulta.
The recent removal of the iron hurs from the windows of most insane asylums is not a matter of experi- ment but lesson which physicians have learned from a study of the situation. It is a matter of psychology. Liberty is a precious thing, and the love of freedom is a prominent part of every one's make-up.
