The Anglo-Japanese Alliance has not been without its crities either in the British or Japanese Empires. For some years there was a 'loud outcry against the reduction of the British Fleet in the Pacific and the concentration of our ships of war in Home waters, but the wisdom of the policy which dictated this steps step only rendered possible by our ander. standing with Japan-was strikingly illustrated on the declaration of war, when the great German Navy found itself interned in its own waterways by the overwhelming superiority of the force opposed to it. In the hunting down and destruction of those units of the German Fleet which were on the high seas at the outbreak of hostilities the Japanese Nayy rendered valuable assistance, and the redaction of Tsingtau was brought about by the co-operation of the Anglo- Japanese forces on land and sea Since

Nor must it-be supposed that the advantage has lain all on one side. The powerful financial sup port of Great Britain in Japan's stupen- doua struggle with Russia
of incalculable value, as the Japanese Government would be the first to admit, while the knowledge that the two nations were united in a defensive alliance afford- ed Japan the opportunity of recovering from her exertions by depriving any preda tory power of the opportunity of taking her at a disadvantage. IN common with the British communities scattered throughout the Far East, the Colony of Hongkong will to-day offer ita cordial felicitations to the Japanese nation on the occasion of the Coronation of His Imperial Majesty Yoaniniro as the 122nd Emperor of Japan. The third son of the late Emperor MUTSUBITO, the reigning sovereign succeeded to the throne on July | 30th, 1919, but, swing to the death of the EMPRESS-DOWAGER in April, 1914, the Coronation ceremony was postponed. Though the delay and the circumstance which necessitated it were matters for great reget at the time, the approaching festivities, we may be sure, will suffer no diminution of splendour or enthusiasm by reason of the fact that they are belated; indeed, the preparations indicate that they will throw into the shade all similar

TAIKOO SENSATION.
The interment took place at Happy Valley last evening,
with the local Volunteer Corps of
military honours, the deceased being a member of
Mr. C. Roberts, an employe of the Sugar Refinery. The deceased was found dead, shot through the head, at his quar ters on Monday. It appears that he wa at his work about 7 am, and returned home about eight. Then he is supposed to have sent a note to a work-mate to the effect that by the time the latter reached the quarters he would find Roberts dead. This, unfortunately, proved to be true, and a service rifle belonging to a friend was found by his side, the injuries to the head being of a ghastly nature.
