THE JEWS AND THE WAR. The New York American in a recent article on this subject said -
The Jews everywhere celebrate to Ja Rosbhashonal, or the New Year of the fourteen million Jews in the world.
Israel Zangwill, historian of the race, estimates that no fewer than ten milliona are engaged in war. Only the three and a half million Jews who are în America he declares, have escaped the war.
It follows that special services will be hold for the 350,000 Jews who are light- ing in the Russian army. 250,000 Jews fighting under the tricolor of France; for 170,000 Jews fighting fort Austria; for 50,000 Jews in the German army, and for 20,000 Jews fighting under the British flag.
Everywhere the Jew is loyal to the flag under which ho lives.. One-fifth of all the French Zouave from Morocco and Tripoli, now fighting in Flanders, will hold to-day the same religious cervice and Signal- celebrate the same holy day as the Re-majority of the Czar's grea. Polish army. Under which flag in this war are the mighty among the Jews Under al flags!

The foregoing is at treat worth weighing, and it is of interest to have this SL merchant's view of the length of time in which an agency should prove itself productive. He is quite positive in saying that with very few exceptions at:- six months' trial is enough to determine whether succes can be expected or not
If no tangible results are forthcoming six months after the arrival of samples and catalogues into the agent's hands the channel may be regarded as a useless one. This same merchant spent some years in a German office, and is able to say that German success in the machinery line Gerived in part from the excellence of the German catalogues and, further, from the boundless assurance of the German sales mas, who was always ready to invent what he did not know about the machine in point Tales of Government assist ance in financing nachinery; business are scouted. He alwave found the German machine-maker hard up for money and the German merchant particularly quick
to appreciate the possibility of financing
new engineering schemes with the aid of the China banka..
Somebody is wrong in his opinions about the scope for new British firms in China. Whether No. 1 is right or not, I quote his words:-
There can be
no doubt that the number of British firms in China is too small, and in my opinion there would be room in nearly all the leading ports for two or three enterprising Bri- tish firms with sufficient capital and good sud 12 Noor back credits. A.M.
China is an expensive country; there would be expenses at the start; a few hundred pounds would have to be sacrificed, but would come back in good profils. Business in China has to be conducted on turnover; the Chinese merchants have no use for peddlers, and if there is one country where all theories get upset and practical experimce alone counts it is China. It thus stands to reason that the business must be trusted to people who know China and Chinese I could mention firms which people. opened in China, placed managers in charge who came out to the East for the first time in their life; the result was failure, and when the doors wore closed a loud outcry against German competition. What the Germans can do the Brish can, and I hope these lines may help Bri- tish rapnufacturers to pay increased at tention to their business with China and may induce enterprising merchants to open new offices in the East to take the place of the Germans who are now dis- appearing.
