"WEALTHY GEORGIAN REMOVED
FROM GAOL AND HANGED. Leo Frank, the wealthy Georgian whose sentence of death for the murder of a fac tory girl named Mary Phagat in April, 1913, was recently commuted to life im prisonment because of the mob rule at his trial was removed from gaol in Georgia one evening by a band of masked men and lynched last month.
Frank was in the prison hospital at the time recovering from a wound in his throat caused by a fellow-prisoner who attempted to munder him. His wife was nursing him in prison.
When the lyuchiers appeared, it is stated, there ware between 25 and 30 armet guards present, but they made no effort to protect Frank, who was taken in a motor- car to Marietta, where the girl Phagan was born, and there hanged on a tree. The body swung from the tree throughout the night. Crowds gathered round it this morning and speeches were made attack- ing Frank's character.
When the body was cut down the crowd rushed forward and viciously maltreated it. Mrs. Frank is prostrated with grief, and bitter feeling against the lynchers, who are at liberty, is beginning to develop.
