I had an introduction to a well-known professor in a small university town. My object in procuring it was to ask about the general German conception of the war, the state of mind of the people, and its social effects all matters belonging to his special branch of study. He, 1 thought. would tell me the truth, because I knew that he has kept his mental balanes all through, and has not repudiated his long connection with English scientific men and English thought.

for the goldiers are displayed.
The weakest spot in the economy of Germany is evidently in her industrial and commercial situation. The greatest efforts are made to keep up the work of production and distribution. While the small towns and the agricultural districts! are depleted of young men, large numbers of able-bodied men of military age are to be seen in the big towns and industrial; districts. They are allowed by the mili tary authorities to follow their callings as civilians whenever their work is if im portance in industry or trade. Thus busi- ress is kept going, though of course withi a greatly reduced personnel.
On mer. chant told me that he carried on his busi- ess with five clerks instead of het woon 50 and 60. This reduction naturally gives an idea of the losses which German busi- ness men must be suffering.
HAW MATERIALS.
Despite all these efforts, and notwith- standing the efficiency of German rganization. it is undoubtedly true that important raw waterials are becoming increasing scarce." Thus the textile) industry of the Chemnitz district is affected by lack of cotton, and the electri- cal industry by the deficiency of copper and other metals. As far as I could ascer- cain, there is no real lack of copper or other metal for the manufacture of am- muition. There are considerable stocks: For that purpose in the country.

REDUCED COST OF PRODUCTION. The future prosperity of a rublier com. panies depends in great measure upon the cost of production. In 1919 our all-in cost was 1s. 10d.; in 1913 it was 19. 3-91d.; in 1014 it was 19. 2.40d. The last amount would have been lower had! we not curtail- ed our output, and had it not been for additional expense caused by the war.
