It would be interesting to know how many so-called British companies aro now on. tho Hongkong register which are controlled largely, if not entirely, by alien cuemics.
While this question is scarcely one that affects the Colony of Hongkong-since all
allen enemmies have cursed to be directers- of local companies-it apparently is not without some brazing on the position of those British Companies which have their head offices in the Treaty ports of China In one ..or two instances in Shanghai recently British share holders have forced the rotirement of alien enemy directora, but there must few so-called British be still not companies in Shanghai. rubber com panies particularly, in the control of which alien eneinies participate, and apparently there is no power, save that of the shareholders' vote, to oust them from the position. TRADING WITH THE ENEMY. It seems a curious anomaly that bodies of aljen enemies incorporated as British companies should still be allowed to exist in England. Ono such company has re cently had the audacity to come into the British Courts under its corporate name -to-prosecuto a claim and it won the
action.
This incident has recalled atten- tien to what Lord WRENDERY in letter to The Times calls "a legal qucation of the first importance at the present time,” namely: Can a body of alien cuemies by incorporating themselves as a.
