Victoria, Hong Kong,

4th September, 1848.

I have the honor to acknowledge the receipt

of your letter of yesterday's date on the subject

of additional watchmen being stationed at

the Naval Stores; and in reply to inform you

that on the removal of the Military Guard 14 Policemen were directed to be entertained for the especial protection of these Stores; and I am informed by the Superintendent of Police that in his opinion this force is perfectly adequate for the object.

Under these circumstances I am not prepared to increase the Colonial expenses

on account of the Naval Department; but as I have already intimated, if you
