I am directed by Earl Grey to transmit to you for the information of the Legislative Council of Hong Kong a Copy of a Despatch with it's Inclosure from the Governor of Hong Kong Reporting the death of the Wife and Child of the late Inspector Smithers, who were drowned in the Typhoon of 1st August.

The passage had been granted with a subsistence to this Colony at a cost...

The sanction of the Treasury for the expense of the Passage will certainly be applied for, & the question of a Pension in future "Must be referred to the Treasury but with favourable disposition of the latter.
