of
helpless and destitute state
infortunate widow and child,
I deemed it proper to
bring
their case
before the Executive Council,
on the 28th instant, when it was
cordially agreed they should be provided with a free passage to England at a
cost of £100;
and I confidently
look for Your Lordship's approval
of this
necessary
disbursement, on
behalf of these distressed parties. Your Lordship will perceive by
the Report of the
Superintendent of Police before referred to, as well as by the letter
of the Chief Magistrate enclosing it, that Mr Smithers had faithfully served the state for a period of 19 years, with satisfaction to his superiors; - and I am assured,
and believe that
his death is really a great loss to
the Department of which he was a most zealous and efficient member. Considering
also that
the superannuation fund, to which he had largely contributed, makes no provision for widows or orphans, I beg
most earnestly to recommend to the sympathy of Your Lordship the remainder of the prayer
on behalf of this widow and Child
for a pension. I consider them fit and worthy objects for Your Lordship's consideration, upon
whom a pension of £50 per annum
would in
my opinion be well bestowed. I have the honour to be,
With the highest respect,
Your Lordship's
Most Obedient
Humble Servant;
