LOCAL ARMY CONTRACTOR COMMITTED FOR TRIAL.
At the Magistracy yesterday the hear ing was concluded of the case in which Chinese, described as the manager of Wing on, coal contractors, is charged with inciting and attempting to induce Staff-Sergeant Hawkins, of the Army Bervice Corps, to accept a bribe of 2100, The prosecution allege that the defendant offered the Bergeant a bribe in order that unscreened coal should be allowed to pass, whereas the contract stipulated that screened coal only should be supplied.
Sorg Hawkins, recalled, said that it.. would have been possible for the defend-- ant to send through unscreened coal with witness's consent.
Captain G. P. Lammert deposed that he remembered the Bergeant coming into The Supply Office on the morning of the alleged offence. The Sergeant made a erinin complaint to him, and handed witness an envelope. The nature of the complaint was that he (the Sergeant) had been offered the envelope and its contents
