WAR NEWS. "NEUVE CHAPELLE SEEMS AN INCIDENT."
The following extracts are taken from Testors sent by au Artillery officer at the Front to his relatives in Hongkong :----
The countryside about fere in tragic to look at houses ruined, broken down, and knocked about by shellfire War is a erucl thing, Yet lots of the inhabitants are living in their houses, ploughing and tilling their fields as if nothing was going on women and children, too. The now-famous village of Nouve Chapelle is just a mass of ruina. I was quite near to it this after
noon.
As it is still rather unhealthy didn't go right in, but had a good look at the captured trenches from the top of w haystack neer one of our old trenches--at least, I looked at a portion of the captured trenches that I couldn't wo before. It was rather interesting. wonder if Cook -or Lunn will ran excursions over ilam when it is all over
"It is very tedious just now, but more or less a constant strain,
and one will not be sorry when it is all over.
When
March ist, I am quite tired to night. I have been up to the observation house twice to-day (just overhanging the trenches) and fired a few rounds with grout success into Gerima redoubt, close to our line. The Huns were sup
posed to be working in their redoubts If they were, I should think that they have stopped. The Huns threw a lot of 8.2 inci Black Marine into a village close to us and smashed up the church Their aeroplanes have been very active and one threw bombs on the same village. Our anti-aircraft guns couldn't get him He looked exactly as if he had been hit at one time, diving head down but he recovered and got. ñway. Then there were four flying over us to-day I do hope they have not spotted us as it might be very unpleasant if they have.
March 22nd.-The men have been playing football most of the day and of the day and seem quite happy. acroplane shelling this morning at our "birds," but they didn't get near them. This sort of warfare is boring, now the excitement of the battle is over. It was quite exciting, tool Last night at about 1a.m. there was very heavy firing on our right front, and a certain amount of gunnery going on, so wo rushed out and stood to our guns, ready to open fire, but it didn't last, and we Burned in ngain. They are rather trying, those alarms.
The night of the great counter-attack I was up most of the night and opened fire, almost as soon as it started, in tha dark, on my alloted arra. Really it was rather awesome, with the battle muskotry and the German shells bursting and screeching in the air some distance from I am glad to say, but we never
us
know when they would get the range, fired nearly 3,000 rounds in three days, and we were at it night and day. The last few days after the show the Ger- man artillery on to life and "biffed" all round the countryside with big and small stuff. We only got really shelled onco, and as we were not firing a the time, were able to go to ground, and, ám glad to say were none the worse for it. I suppose Neuve Chapelle will be classed big battle, but these days it really ses an incident and not so very great,
We are all wondering how things are in the Dardanelles and what is going to happen there. One cannot help think- ing that the fall of Constantinople would have a big effect-on-things, in general and make a difference, but it is hard to know what will make a difference."

The construction in this country of peasants of the Government of Akmolinsk five dirigible torpedo boats of the uit, atin Western Siberis has been published in a cost of £20,000 each, is announced in remarkable article quoted by the Daily Express to-day from the New York Sun.
Mr. Thomas R. MacMachen, who is aaid to be in charge of the work, has just returned to the United States. He con fidently predicts a spectacular attempt to raid London in the latter part of April, if not before, by Zeppelins armed with guns fring stoel-capped projectiles rather than bomba, and declares that it is prin cipally to defenti Great Britain against this attack that the Zeppelin destroyers are being built.
They will also be used, ho mys, for detecting German submarines, destroying them, and marking their precise position for the gunners of the British Ficot.
These little dirigibles, which are entirely new in the history of aeronau tics," says Mr MacMechen, "will each be equipped with one torpedo gun, fring torpedo that will explode on contact.

"These small rigid dirigibles which we are building can stay in the air watching for an enemy, say, seventy-five miles from their base, for at least ten hours. They wan wirdess reports back to their base
"Germany's newest Zeppelins are 500 feet long. Our Zeppelin destroyers are but 230 feet long, and only 28 feet in diamater. The little defense dirigiblea have two engines, one forward of 75-00 horse-power, and one aft with 120 horse power.
"Perhaps the most radical idea we have followed in building the new air craft is that to maintain rigidity we have enclosed the gas compartments in an envelope of wood instead of metal, like the Zeppelins.
"We Avy laminated spruce from Canada. Thin strips of it are wound in spiral from one end to the other of the cigar-shaped hull, and they are locked in a mahogany ring at the end.
The strips cross and recross each other, and a copper-riveted together, There are also fourteen straight girders. possible for the weight.

There is no hanging car, the car being built into the main structure. The designer believes that the new aircraft will have superior speed and climbing power to the German Zoppelius.

The enemies troops cannot withstand the well-aimed fire of the heroic Russian soldiers, the firm stocks of their bayonots, and their clover swordplay.
