"HOW LONG ?”:

THE ONLY ROAD TO VICTORY.

A FRENCH VIEW OF THE ALLIANCE.

(ISBUED BY THE "PRESS BUREAU-"]..........

The following communication is from 6 British officer whose work throws him much into contact with the French troops:

the Rustinns Now the question is:

How many British soldiers are there i Franco 1 Franco is giving all she hug all her men, all her national energie towards maintaining her army in th field. Dehind her and the British ro sources.

If you tell a Frenchman that a million or more men havo been recruited in Enga land since the beginning of the war, he is greatly impressed, astonished even, that voluntury efforts should have produced such a foroc. But if you tell him that the proces of putting this army into the Gold must be slow, owing to the difficulty of producing rifles, guns, explosives, and Hig other necessaries, he is incredulous. Great Britain is unbounded. If a mil belief in the manufacturing power of lion men are ready to give their lives, are not the remaining million pre pared to give their labour, for a pittanca if need be, to attain the end desired!

In a letter I sent last week I tried to give a rough idea of what is going on in

week I to say something of the war as it appears to the French nation. For although one does not see much of those who are not part of tho fighting mohimery, the mere fact of living with Frenchmen puts one. to some extent into their attitude of mind. And if I can convey this impres sion to those who may read this it will have been worth doing; for there is The requirements of the Allied Aemics nothing more important, whether from are enormous, and Britain inust bo, to the point of view of our co-operation a large extent, the manufactory, the gen during the war or from that of our rela-eral store, for the whole. If we tro tal tions with them when the struggle is attempt to keep pace with the require

ORGANIZED EFFORT.

Ca y est 1" This was the expression which greeted the appearance of the notices of general mobilization on the afternoon of August 1st last, I realized its meaning a few weeks ago; we were

It should be pos car coming towards us and trust in Pro-gible for us to inculcate and adopt this vidence. The nearest English equivalent is one pometimes used in military circles "We're for itin for tomething very big with no possibility of avoiding Fit.

In France there was no illusion as to what those mobilization notice meant; every man of military age and passably sound constitution was certain to have to take his place in the line, and the whole national life was to change its course and be poured into one channel, this maintenance of the military machine.. This change of conditions has now lasted six months. The harvest was got in by the women and children all Factories which could be utilized for pro- duding things necessary for the Army A. have been organized for that purpose, and work night and day, as also do many of the sugar-making factories. As to the rest of Franch trade and manufacture, all one cameny is that it still exists. Every effort is made to execute, orders and to avoid loss of customers, especially in neutral countries. But the difficulties are very great, not only, owing to lack of labour, but from delays of transport.
