Evidence was given by Mr. O. E. Owen, proprietor of the Carlton Hotel, the manager of the Stag Hotel, and she proprietor of the Tokyo Hotel, at which the defendant had stayed.
Ar. W. B. Hind, who prosecuted, said that the charge of false pretence referred only to the second month's credit at the Astor House Hotel. Mr. Chopard had stated that he would never have allowed the defendant to stay at the hotel during that period if he had not believed in the existence of the pearls, which defendant stated were in his box. He ainierfded there was a continuing pretence that there were pearls thora all the time, and, assuming the suggration of the defence that the pearls might have been taken out were true, the defendant never informed the hotel that lie had taken them ent. It he had shown that this man went to the hotel and nover intended to pay he had proved his caso Castlemaine had bean to the Astor House Hotel, the Carlton Hotel, the Tokyo, Stuy, and Nomura Hotels, and had never paid in pither case.
