THE LOSS OF HM. S.

FORMIDABLE".

MORE DETAILS.

SURVIVORS STORIES CATE

LORDON, January 3rd. Two hundred and one men from the lost warship liave been rescued, but it is feared that all the others have been lost. The trawler Providence landod 71 survivors at Brixham. The Providence pioked up 09 men and two officers on board the Formidable's pinnaco, which was at the sime nearly full of water, and was leaking badly. Many of the survivors were in aight attire, and others were wrapped in blankets,

At 9 o'clock on Friday morning the Providence, while running for shelter at the height of a gale, sighted the pinnace foundering in the mountainous peas and lying a scarf on the end of an oar as a signal of distress. With the utmost diffi culty the trawlor maneuvred to windward of the pinnace, and after four attempts passed a line aboard and hauled the pinnace round the stern to the ice quarter. The sailors began to jump aboard the trawler, and there was great danger of their losing their lives, as the sons were 30ft, high. It took half an hour to get fall on board the Providence. A lad 18 years of age was suffering from exposure, and he required immediato trentment.

30 OFFICERS LOST. BE

An official announcement states that 30 aficors went down in the Formidable. These included Captain Arthur N. Loxler and Commanders Charles Bolland, Wi- liam Harrison, and Honry Street.

The survivors who reached Brixham 77-6 state that two other boatloads left the

Formidable.

Naval writers in the London newspapers emind the public in any case-whether the vessel was sunk by a British mine or a Gorman torpedo of the appositeness of the words uttered by Mr. Winston Chur chill on November 27th, that Great Britain could afford such a loss every month They also mention the wish of the Admiralty to avoid taking unnecessary Fisks with the battle squadron.

BURVIVORS NARRATIVES.

The survivora on the Providence state that there was the greatest difficulty in launching the boats. Their pinnace was stove in soon after it touched the water, and they had to stuff the holes up with their jumpers. All the cars on the pinnace were smashed in fending the small craft off the sinking battleship. Some of the crow jumped from the deck and swam to a boat. One boat fell nose first, throwing its crew into the sea. When the pinnace got away her crew were singing "It's a long way to Tipperary, but a heavy sen broke over the boat and compelled them to save their breath for continuous

One survivor states that, after hearing
