No. less a personage than the Tsar interests himself in defending the General, but the central figure of the story is Joseph Rouletabille, the youthful reporter of a Parisian journal, who suceerds in the most wonderful manner in straightening out the tangle when it seems to have got beyond the control of its creater. There is plenty of movement and excitement, and the author veils the dentement so cleverly going that it is impossible to foretell what is to happen. There is more than one thrillin most of the chapters, and the skill with which Rouletabille escapes from the Nihiliste, after being tried and condemned to, denth, is our own inimitable Sherlock worthy of Holmes:
